Leader of Islamic Revolution said Wednesday evening in a meeting with visiting Syrian President Bashar Assad that unity between Iran and Syria was manifestation of regional resistance.
Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei added in his meeting with President Bashar al-Assad and his accompanying delegation that the current conditions in the Middle East are in favor of the resistance force and to the loss of the United States and its allies.
He emphasized that the resistance front should take advantage of this great opportunity and strengthen the foundations of internal cooperation more than ever before.
Ayatollah Khamenei stressed the existence of unity between Tehran and Damascus, adding, “The fruit of this unity and its effects on developments in Palestine, Lebanon and Iraq, as well as the entire region, are quite evident.”
The IR Leader said the oppressor governments have concentrated on breaking the bonds of unity among the members of the resistance front in the region and decreasing the level of relations among the comprising countries of that front.
“Such efforts would never bear any fruit and the US sword in the region would increasingly get blunt,” he added.
Ayatollah Khamenei considered the new US approach in the region as the result of the country’s weak status, adding, “This (new) approach is not due to any essential difference between the current US president and the previous ones, since anyone else in his (President Barack Obama’s) position, too, could not have adopted a different policy in the region.”
The IR Leader stressed that the ground for cooperation between Iran and Syria is quite broad and emphasized that the broad potentials for further expansion of such ties need to be fully taken advantage of
“Syria’s most prominent characteristic is its resolute resistance and it is exactly due to the same point that the United States and the other oppressor powers remain enemies of Syria.”
Ayatollah Khamenei commemoratws the name and memories of the late Syrian president Hafez al-Assad, adding, “Syria’s prominent status in the region is the result of that late leader’s efforts and Mr. Bashar al-Assad, too, is pursuing the same path quite well today.”
The Leader of the Islamic Revolution approved of the Syrian president’s proposal for the establishment of a quadrilateral union among Iran, Syria, Turkey and Iraq, adding, “Syria’s current relations with Iraq are quite positive and that country’s government is in need of assistance for resolving the ongoing problems there.”
In the meeting in which President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was also present, President Assad, for his part, emphasized that Tehran–Damascus relations are of a strategic nature
“The general conditions of the region are now in favor of the resistance movement,” he said.
“The western governments, particularly the United States, have lots of problems inside their own countries, as well as the problems with which they are entangled in the region, where they have gained no tangible result so far, even in Lebanon," he added.
Assad aid that under such conditions cooperation among Iran, Syria, Iraq and Turkey, and particularly the establishment of a union among these four countries would be to the benefit of the entire region.”
Referring to the Iraqi Prime Minister’s recent visit to Damascus, the Syrian President announced his country’s readiness for assisting Iraq, adding, “The aliens as well as some regional countries, are after sowing the seeds of discord between Shia and Sunni Muslims in Iraq, and it is necessary to assist the Iraqi government to dismantle that plot.”
Bashar Assad moreover said that the landslide victory of President Ahmadinejad in recent election and his reelection further strengthened the resistance movement in the region.
“The defeat of the efforts made by some western countries to interfere in Iran’s affairs after your presidential election was a good lesson for them and with the people’s vote in favor of Mr. Ahmadinejad they (the western countries) realized that the Iranian nation is still favoring the late Imam’s path and the path of resistance,” he noted.
