Supreme Leader meets city officials

Tehran, March 4 - Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Saturday called for remodeling Tehran into a city with Iranian and Islamic identity, a scenic and delightful one which possesses public welfare and solid constructions.

Ayatollah Sayed Ali Khamenei made the call in light of the position of Tehran as an influential cultural political and social center in the country.

Addressing members of Tehran's Islamic City Council as well as the city's Mayor and his assistants, the leader praised the presence of devout, revolutionary and caliber people in the Islamic city council and also in the municipality, urging officials to take the opportunity.

He said the people have shown in various elections that they follow up service in light of the bedrock aspirations of Islam and the Revolution, so the council and the municipality staffs must make efforts to serve people in a brotherly and cooperative climate which revolves around logic and law.

The leader of the Islamic Revolution considered devoutness, honesty, scientific approach, the spirit to serve people, justice seeking, having affection for people and the financial and conduct healthiness in different civic managerial posts as keys to the solving of numerous problems of Tehran.

He emphasized on the healthiness of civic directors, arguing that any casual treatment toward the issue will cause many problems which have ramifications for public daily life. He urged for careful selection of directors in all levels in compliance with the set parameters.

Noting that Tehran for one thing suffers from lack of identity, Ayatollah Khameni underscored that the city must be granted an Islamic and Iranian identity via a long-term planning and serious follow-ups.

The leader distinguished between beauty and luxury, touching upon the spiritual effects of beauty of city. He said that the city of Tehran must become a multifariously welfare center, especially regarding transportation system." He also urged civic officials to make it a priority to consolidate buildings, particularly in crowded and old areas.

Ayatollah Khamenei referred to the large number of clients of the municipalities and called on civic officials to be in contact with people.

"In dealing with clients, staffs must observe four parameters of facilitating and expediting the pace of affairs, honoring people and building trust."

The leader also put the city's cultural centers top on agenda of the municipality, adding "the cultural centers must possess a spiritual and knowledgeable surrounding along with an Islamic and revolutionary culture and at the same time enjoy sincere, revolutionary and religious directors."

Prior to the Supreme Leader's speech, Mehdi Chamran, the head of the Islamic city council and Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf, Tehran's mayor made some remarks.

Chamran delivered a report on the activities and ratifications of the council, mainly a comprehensive and detailed plan which draws the outlook of Tehran in the Twenty Year Vision.

Ghalibaf too briefed the audience on the five month activities of the municipality.
