question| If a pregnant woman who does not wish to have a baby undergoes abortion, what can she do to atone for her sin?
answer| Aborting the fetus is a grave sin and is categorically impermissible. To atone for this sin, one must repent in earnest. Furthermore, any individual who caused the abortion is obligated to pay the specified blood money (dīyah). The recipient of the blood money is the canonically recognized inheritor (wārith) of the aborted fetus (bearing in mind the multiple tiers of inheritors that may be involved), except for the inheritor who caused the abortion, in which case he or she does not have a claim to the blood money.
