Q.| If we are wearing mascara, do we need to wipe it off before performing the ablutions of wuḍū and ghusl? If so, how well do we need to wipe it off? Does the color that remains under and around the eyes even after thoroughly washing our mascara off and that lacks any tangible substance (jirm) prevent the valid performance of ablution?

A.| Anything that partakes of a tangible substance (jirm) and that blocks water from reaching the eyelashes or the skin must be removed prior to performing ablution.
